Newbie looking to become a cellist

I've been interested in the cello for a long time, but it was only recently that I decided that I was going to learn the instrument. I don't know anyone that plays or owns one, so I will be learning the instrument as a complete isolated newbie so I have some questions and requests.

First of all, where should I look to find a quality instrument, bow, and other accessories? I obviously don't need (nor could I exploit at this point) the most artfully crafted pieces, just something that I can use and abuse that will still have a decent tone. What would everyone recommend? What should I look for in an instructor? Are there any good books or DVDs on theory, composition or technique? What about online resources? Anything I should know before diving head-first?

Total beginner with no IRL resources looking for whatever pointers he can get.

x-posted all over the place.
